Frequently asked questions

What is a multideck fridge?

A multideck is an open-fronted display fridge with several shelves (“decks”). A curtain of cold air across the front keeps products chilled without doors, so customers can help themselves.

Is an open fridge more expensive to run than a glass door fridge?

An open front loses more cold air than a door, which is why every chilled multideck here has a night blind to cover it when you close. If you sell mainly cans and bottles, a glass door fridge uses less energy.

Which width should I choose?

Measure the space, then leave room for air around the cabinet. Widths are 60, 100, 120, 150 and 180 cm (shutter models 100, 120 and 180 cm). The 150 and 180 cm multidecks need two 13A sockets; the smaller ones need one.

Where should I place a multideck?

Away from entrance doors, heaters and direct sunlight, in a room no warmer than 25 °C. Draughts and heat break the air curtain and make the fridge work harder.

How quickly will it be delivered?

Delivery is free to business premises on mainland UK up to York, to the front door of ground-floor locations. Further north, the Highlands & Islands and Northern Ireland are quoted separately. Allow about 5–8 working days from a cleared bank transfer, 8–10 working days for card payments, and 2–4 weeks north of York, Leeds and Blackpool. Delivery details.

Where can I use an open fridge?

In convenience stores, supermarkets, petrol stations, sandwich shops and takeaways — mainly for drinks, dairy, sandwiches and other chilled food.

What temperature should an open fridge be?

Between 0 °C and +7 °C. Our chilled multidecks run at -1 °C to +7 °C.

How often should I clean an open fridge?

At least once a week, to keep bacteria and mould away. Clean it straight away if you notice any mould or spills.

Discover Your Favourite Open Fridge

A multideck fridge, or open fridge, is a refrigerated display cabinet for perishable goods in grocery stores, supermarkets, convenience stores and takeaways.

Its several (“multideck”) open-fronted shelves let customers see and reach products easily, which encourages impulse buys and lifts sales.

Multidecks are ideal for “grab and go” sales and can be set up for fresh meat, fruit and vegetables, dairy or general chilled goods.

Multideck Fridge Temperature and Contents

Choose the temperature by what you sell. Our chilled multidecks run between -1 °C and +7 °C — right for dairy, soft drinks, cooked meats, sandwiches, fruit and vegetables. Fresh meat needs a colder setting, around 0 °C to +2 °C.

For frozen products, choose one of our Display freezers, which run at -18 °C to -22 °C.

Features of your Open Fridge

Useful features to look for in an open-fronted display fridge:

  • Removable bottom plates make cleaning easier.
  • Auto defrost melts ice from the evaporator automatically, using electric elements. Off-cycle defrost does the same by briefly pausing refrigeration.
  • Glass side panels improve visibility when the multideck stands on its own; they add little when it sits next to other units.
  • Stainless steel multideck finishes suit premises where standard colours don’t match the decor.
  • Lighting shows stock at its best; our open fridges have top-mounted LED lights.
  • Ticket strips show prices, product information and offers.
  • Shelf risers stop products sliding off tilted shelves.
  • Castors make a heavy multideck easy to position, clean and service.
  • Night blinds cover the open front after closing to save energy.

Multideck Open Fridge: A Versatile Solution for Your Business

For grocery shops, takeaways and sandwich shops, displaying products well while keeping them fresh is essential. Display-Fridge Wholesale has supplied commercial refrigeration across the UK for over 30 years, and the multideck open fridge is one of the most versatile solutions we offer.

The Allure of the Multideck Fridge

With no doors in the way, an open fridge invites customers to browse and pick up products, making shopping easier and encouraging repeat visits.

As The Guardian mentions, store layout strongly shapes how customers shop. The open fridge both preserves food and promotes products, encouraging impulse purchases.

High Efficiency and Versatility

Multidecks hold a steady temperature for dairy, fruit and vegetables, drinks and ready-to-eat sandwiches.

They work as well in a grocery store as in a sandwich shop. Tiered shelves keep every sandwich visible, easy to reach and fresh all day.

Save Space with Multideck Fridges

Stacked shelves show more products on a small footprint — ideal for takeaways and smaller grocery stores.

As the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations notes, vertical integration improves efficiency and cuts costs; a multideck applies the same idea to your display.

Making an Economical Choice

Our multidecks are sold at wholesale prices, and their energy-efficient design keeps running costs down — good value now and over the years.

Our Commitment to Quality

Our multidecks come from reputable manufacturers with strict quality standards. They are built from robust, high-grade materials to perform reliably in daily commercial use.

We also support you after the sale, with advice on maintenance and a full range of spare parts.

Environmental Responsibility

LED lighting and digital temperature control cut energy use, lowering your bills and supporting your sustainability goals.

According to the United Nations Environment Programme, sustainable practices also benefit businesses through cost savings, customer loyalty and a stronger brand.

The best Open Fridge for displaying the food

Open fridges are among the most useful display fridges for supermarkets and convenience stores. Their main strength is capacity: lots of products, clearly displayed.

A multideck can hold drinks, sandwiches, cooked meats, fish, butter, cheese and other dairy products.

Space is always tight in shops, cafés and restaurants, so a tall display that uses little floor space is a real advantage.

Introducing the Multideck Fridge

Before buying, check the dimensions: a multideck is a large cabinet and needs enough space and airflow around it. Choose the width and height that fit your shop.

A taller multideck displays more products per square metre — ideal when floor space is limited.

Open front fridge

An open front gives customers direct access to products and attracts more shoppers. For a door-fronted alternative that uses less energy, see our glass door fridges.

Internal LED lighting makes the display bright and inviting, so customers see every product clearly. A well-lit multideck works like an advertising board for your stock.

Tips for taking care of the dairy products in Multideck Display Fridges

Dairy products spoil quickly if they are not stored and handled correctly, as bacteria multiply when temperatures rise.

Spoiled stock means waste and lost money, so temperature is the most important thing to control.

Keep dairy cold and stable in your multideck: low temperatures slow bacterial growth and extend shelf life.

Make distinctive retail open fridges

A clear theme across your shop creates a memorable experience. Simple shelves and fittings work well when the whole store follows the same idea.

You don’t need an expensive fit-out: a consistent theme and a few well-chosen displays are enough.

Urge people to buy your food

A key reason people shop in physical stores is to see and handle products. Make products easy to reach and pick up, rather than leaving them boxed on a shelf.

Recollect about cross-promoting

Cross-merchandising raises basket size: place products that go together side by side. For example, stock cheese, milk and ready meals together in one multideck.

Keep them adaptable

In a small shop, compact display fridges make the most of the space and are easier to move when you restock or change the layout. Give the best spots to your best-selling products.

Use multideck fridges to show people your things

If a product needs explaining, use signs or ticket strips on your display fridges to tell customers what it is and how to use it.

Consider upcycling

Upcycling — reusing old materials to make something new — can give your shop displays character. Standard shelving remains the basis, but creative touches make you stand out.

Be smart with your visuals

Short, catchy messages on or around your displays add personality, encourage customers to explore and get shared on social media.

Open multideck commercial fridge displays are a key part of most supermarkets and convenience stores, thanks to their large capacity for drinks, food and chilled goods.

All you have to know about the Open Fridge

Check the space before you buy: multidecks come in several widths and heights. The taller the display chiller, the more it holds per square metre — a great way to display more products in a limited space.

Multideck Chiller Introduction and its Points of interest

Good refrigeration is essential for every food business, from shops and shopping centres to restaurants and hotels.

The multideck is the most common display unit in supermarkets and shops, as it stores and displays large quantities of products — from cold drinks to chilled meals and dairy.

Purchase a refrigerated multideck

Choose the size and features you need from our display fridge range. Consider a Grab and Go fridge for fast sales, a patisserie fridge for cakes and desserts, or a Serve Over Counter or Countertop fridge to present food attractively.

A Drinks Fridge boosts beverage sales in any café or store, and an Ice Cream Freezer is a great addition for selling frozen treats.
